Gas control on an historic model?
by John
Well, no likes and no comments on this morning’s post… no picture the problem???? hmmm???
So, this afternoon, the weather was windy and wet, and unsuitable for winching concrete steps, so I retreated to the workshop. Much to SWMBO’s disapproval.
And did a bit more with the gas supply and control.
And that is what it looked like.
OK, except that Primus knob does not appeal. And the wooden base is looking decidedly wonky. More about the base later. I have some improvements in mind.
This wheel was a reject from my triple expansion steam engine model. I wondered if it would look OK on the Trevithick. It certainly looks better than the Primus knob Yes/No?
Possibly not historically accurate, but maybe yes for 1850-60?
John,
I sent a longish response ro your post but it seems to have vanished.
I’ll try again later
Cheers 🍻

Think it looks better with the brass wheel, John.
The pipes at the front to the gas valve might not be historically correct, but don’t look entirely out of place.
If you want historical accuracy, it won’t fly, however as a working engine that’s been in use for some time, then it doesn’t look out of place.

Thanks Ian. I seem to have sidestepped historical accuracy, Don’t I?

Quite an improvement on the primus knob, but I feel it is still a bit on the big side. I think you may have to get that other project on the lathe underway and make a valve handle.

Maybe, Brendan. I am looking forward to finishing this project. That might outweigh any aesthetic or historical considerations.

I really love the look of your gas calving and it’s associated plumbing.
Hey it is your model, you are the artist and can take a little license with it when ever necessary, or just because you want to.

Heck, you are the artist building this tribute to steam history. It is perfectly OKAY to take s little licence with s project when functionality is at risk, or just because you feel like it,
Yes some scale purists will bark about it, but I bet they are unwilling to come and stoke your boiler with coal;-)

should it be a wheel or should it be a gas tapered plug on/off valve handle ? great work John

Yes I think that I got the entire quota of sensitivity in the family Bro. But why particularly do you opine so?

Spoked wheel way better than Purims knob. Just needs tossing in the washing machine and shrinking a tad. (Don’t you just wish that possible?)
As has been said, your model your choice of artistic license or words to that effect. Just go for it, get it finished and IF you wish later change it.

Oops! auto correct? seems to have changed Primus to the Jewish festival of Purim.
