Southworth Steam Pump- first parts
by John
A couple of days in the workshop, and the large castings are almost fully machined. Straightforward machining. Made a couple of mistakes, but none fatal. Changing BA fasteners to metric.

The steam cylinders block in the mill vise. Almost complete water cylinders block sitting behind for the photo.

Steam cylinders on right, water cylinders on left. The temporary steel pins are to ensure accurate alignment of the 2 blocks. Water and steam passages come later.
This is the first model machining which I have done since April. It should be second nature, but I admit to a bit of hesitation, nervousness, initially. Especially starting on an irregular, slightly complicated shape like these. But it is all coming back now. And I am really enjoying it.
Nice work John.
Is there a table I can reference when switching from BA to metric? I will soon be embarking on a project that had plans all in imperial. All my tsps and dies and lathe threading capability are metric, it would save me a bit of time.
Glad you are back to building instead of repairing your machines.

Thanks Jenny, Yes, there is a table which I will send you. And post here, because others might be interested. Of course for most BA sizes you have to go slightly bigger or smaller to get to the closest metric. BA8 for example is 2.38mm. I chose M2. M2.5 would have been closer, but I am a bit low on M2.5 taps. Stainless fasteners in metric are cheap and readily available on ebay from China, as I am sure you know. John

Hi John,
Greetings from Montrose, Scotland. I have enjoyed your posts about the Southworth duplex pump as I am currently making one (8″ version). I notice that you refer to the Bertinat articles – are these the ones from Model Engineer Vols 170 – 172? I’ve been trying to track these down for some time, without success. Are you able to help please?
Regards,
Dave Edwards,
